European Union Reaction to the Ethiopian Election

European Union _ Ethiopian Election

Borkena

Toronto – The European Union in Ethiopia on Tuesday released a brief statement regarding the 7th general election in the country, which took place on Monday.

It came in the form of a joint statement from 22 member European countries and the diplomatic missions of Canada, Norway, and Switzerland.

It commended the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), election workers, opposition parties, voters, candidates, and civil society for “their contribution” in the election.

Notably, the European Union did not field official election observers to the election. However, it was closely following the election.

The African Union and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) observed the election, which the European Union recognized as “an important role,” although an official report is pending.

The European Union has not offered its remark on the election process, including the situation during election day across the country. However, it noted that the election did not take place across the country.

NEBE itself admitted that elections were disrupted in more than 140 locations in the country due to security concerns.

The board’s  reports seem to align with the claim from rebel groups operating in the Amhara and Oromia regions. They imposed mobility restrictions for vehicles except for emergency health services.

Describing the election as a “certificate to kill the Amhara people,” Fano forces in the Amhara region on Tuesday said they “have successfully disrupted the election” in the region.

The European Union, Canada, Norway, and Switzerland confirmed that there were places where elections were not held without specifying them.

“We hope that all constituencies that were unable to hold elections on 1 June will be given the opportunity to do so,” the joint statement said.

Apart from areas where elections were disrupted for security reasons, no election was organized in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. The EU was expressing concern over another devastating conflict in the region.

  1. What did I tell you about the qualification and ingenuity of our women? The proof is in the pudding. Our sister Melatework bint Hailu has received the commendations from the EU, AU and all those foreign groups who sent highly qualified observer delegations to oversee the national election held on June 1, 2026. They all commended her for skillfully planning and successfully executing a massive election. Okay bigots, misogynists and connivers! Look at the moon and eat your crow. Or better yet, jump in the lake! Your dream of an all out bloodshed did not materialize. Go into your smelly corners in Minnesota, Toronto, LA, Michigan, Tennessee, Oslo and Down Under and cry your eyeballs out! Those upright and noble people we left behind have resolutely thumbed their noses at you. Keep busy stinking up your joints!

  2. The European Union sent its observation mission during the elections under the EPRDF because those elections were open and democratic. They are aware that the elctions Abiy Ahmed holds are farce and below standards.do not endorse them. Any way the military intervention of the regional power Tigray in Ethiopia to oust Abiy Ahmed is becoming more likely as the instability in the country calls for it.
