Toronto – An armed group in the Waghumra zone of the Amhara region of Ethiopia, which calls itself the Agew Democratic Union (ADU)  – it is also known as Agew Shengo – last week controlled the Tsgbji district, according to the DW Amharic report.

This is the second district to come under the rebel group after Abergele district.

Many have reportedly been displaced, abandoning their places.  The source cited Yigzaw Yismaw, a resident of 06 kebele in the district, as saying, “Many have abandoned their places after the attack on May 27. They are without shelter in the wilderness, spending day and night there.”

Many made it to Sekota, seat of the zone’s administration, but no emergency aid was provided for more than six days now, according to the report.

The city has reportedly been receiving displaced people from different localities, including Korem, Ofla, and Alamata, where the TPLF fighters reportedly abused the non-ethnic Tigray population. Yet, Sekota still does not have a designated shelter for the internally displaced.

“No one carried our belongings when we left. Everyone was empty-handed; property, including vehicles, was abandoned. We are now in the arid part. There is no food. People in an indescribable situation…” the resident added.

Political leaders in government administration and residents with a political difference to the armed rebel had to leave behind Tsagbji

Agew Shengo claims to fight for “self-determination” and “cultural preservation” of the ethnic Agaw people.  The armed group reportedly controlled Abergele district on May 20.

DW Amharic said it attempted to reach out to Shumet Tilahun, Deputy Head of Waghumra Zone Administration, to get remarks regarding the districts reportedly under Agew Shengo control. There was no response, it added.

Waghumra zone is located along the border with the Tigray region of Ethiopia. It is one of the parts of the region that was severely impacted by a drought and famine like situation after war broke out between Fano forces and government forces.

  1. The rebels of Agew Shengo are a disgrace. They have come to work with a divisive, destructive and anti-Ethiopian brute and have totallly forgotten the proud Lalibela heritage. They seem to be living in the 12th. century. Their leader does not appear to have heard of democracy of the type that is in Europe and north America where everybody is equally subject to the law of the land.

Please, come to your senses, follow our countrymen in Gojjam and fight for the only possible solution: a genuinely democratic system for Ethiopia to be enjoyed equally by all Ethiopians, with strong legal and institutional controls on all leaders to ensure that they will never ever be ሰው በላ dictators again like Mengistu, Meles or Abiy.

  2. Folks, we have a new contestant entry into the beauty contest. The next ones will be Ms Piggy and Winnie the Pooh. Why not? That country is huge open range for such contest.
