Toronto – Ethiopia’s ruling party – Prosperity Party – says it has purged over 8000 members over ethical concern and competence issues.
Adem Farah, deputy president, announced that the party had been taking actions, intended to strengthen the party’s internal structure, over the past three months.
BBC Amharic quoted him as saying that the party “granted recognition for those who deserve it and took ‘proper’ corrective measures against those who were lacking competence,” after a discussion and evaluation.
He added that “especially from the point of view of taking corrective disciplinary measure, generally measures taken on 8,613 leaders.”
It ranges from removing from position to changing roles of the leaders.
It appears that it is taken across the country. The Amhara region – where there has been a bloody conflict for over two years now – has seen major changes.
The region has confirmed that it has removed some of the former heads of offices and transferred others. Thirty-five new officials have been appointed and seven of them are advisors to the region’s president, Arega Kebede.
The Federal government and the defense force had been making accusations that some politicians in the region were sabotaging the operation against what it calls “extremists.”
The South Ethiopia region has also experienced the party’s restructuring-like changes. BBC Amharic reported cited officials from the region as saying that new leaders have been appointed to positions.
The new leaders were evaluated based on “effective leadership, work ethics and preparation[academic].”
Gambela and South West Ethiopia regions have also undertaken leadership changes.
The number of leaders appointed and transferred to another role in South West Ethiopia is 15. In Gambella, 66 leadership changes.
South Ethiopia region 11 leadership changes made. Changes in the Somali and Oromia regions of Ethiopia unspecified in the report.
In a related development, there have been reports, from other sources, recently that the dictatorship of the party’s leader, Abiy Ahmed, has been growing. Those who challenge policies and measure the prime minister is taking in a range of areas have been removed while conformists are promoted.
The conflict in the country was one of the dividing issues. There have been voices that resolving the conflict peacefully should be a priority.
Last week, the Prime Minister, on a record, stated that those who say “peace has to come before development are not with us.” we are on different paths, he added. “We develop on one hand and we fight on the other,” he said during an “informal meeting” with members of his government and former officials in Bale.
