Toronto – Ethiopia’s ruling party on Thursday announced that its central committee is holding a meeting.
“This afternoon, we commenced the Prosperity Party’s council meetings to deliberate on our strategic priorities,” the party said in a brief announcement.
No further detail is provided as to what the party leaders are discussing. Leaders of regional states are attending it.
A banner hanged on in the meeting hall, which is noticeable from the picture the party shared on its social media, reads ” ሕጋዊ እና ሕዝባዊ መንግስተን ማጽናት ፤ በኅሊና መጥራት ፤ በተቋማት መብቃት” which could translate to “strengthening legal and popular government” – clean conscience and Institutional efficiency.” The party has been facing a legitimacy crisis for several years now due to the security situation in the country, war and economic hardship.
The meeting came a day after the Prime Minister and other senior members of this government including his deputy Temesgen Tiruneh returned from a visit to Wollega where they spent two days visiting agricultural, manufacturing and tourism projects. The prime minister and his entourage were seen, from the video footage the state media released, riding a bike in the streets of Nekemte.
Wolelga had been one of the most dangerous areas in the Oromia region from a security point of view. Thousands of innocent civilians, mostly ethnic Amhara, had been massacred in the area.
The central committee is meeting ahead of the 7th general Federal election which is set to take place in June this year. The ruling party has already started what appears to be a campaign-like activity. The visit to Wollega itself seems to have the hallmarks of a full-fledged election campaign. The image projected from the visit is that the region is “restored to peace and development works are underway.” Yet, there had been reports that the militant Oromo Liberation Army launched an attack targeting militia forces in a location 35 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa.
Prosperity party did not disclose as to when the meeting is ending.
