Federal Authorities Stress Geographic Proximity and Sovereign Rights While Urging Constructive Regional Dialogue

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia issued a statement reaffirming that the nation’s historical and geographical ties to the Nile River and the Red Sea are immutable realities that cannot be altered by political rhetoric or external pressure.
The Ministry highlighted that Ethiopia serves as the source of the Nile, with its highlands contributing 85 percent of the river’s total annual water volume. Federal authorities stated that any dialogue or governance frameworks regarding the management and equitable utilization of the Nile Basin must recognize these physical realities.
Addressing maritime access and regional stability, the Ministry emphasized Ethiopia’s enduring historical and geographical connections to the Red Sea.
The statement noted that despite historical shifts in political boundaries, Ethiopia’s sovereign borders lie just 48 kilometers from the Red Sea coastline. Consequently, the Ministry stressed that all comprehensive discussions on regional maritime security and institutional governance in the Horn of Africa must account for Ethiopia’s legitimate national interests and geographic proximity.
Federal authorities dismissed attempts to alter these realities through coercive measures, political discourse, or proxy actions aimed at destabilizing the country.
The Ministry declared that acts of hostility or external aggression will neither alter facts on the ground nor diminish Ethiopia’s legitimate role and responsibility in regional affairs. Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and regional cooperation, the Ministry declared its readiness to protect Ethiopia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and vital national interests.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded by calling on regional actors to engage in constructive dialogue, partnership, and good-neighborly relations to address shared security and development challenges, rejecting zero-sum approaches to Horn of Africa diplomacy.
