Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – A high-level Ethiopian delegation has delivered a message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as part of efforts to support peace in the war-torn nation.
The delegation, led by the Director General of Ethiopia’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), was received in Port Sudan. The visit included Ambassador Redwan Hussein and East African Affairs Advisor Getachew Reda, according to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA).
During the visit, Ethiopian officials conveyed Prime Minister Abiy’s message of Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting Sudan’s quest for peace and stability. “We received a warm welcome here in Port Sudan, and Ethiopia stands firm in its support for Sudanese-led peace efforts,” the head of the delegation said.
This latest engagement builds on a July 2024 meeting between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and General al-Burhan, aimed at encouraging dialogue and regional cooperation to help end Sudan’s internal conflict.
Sudan has been gripped by violence since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti.
The ongoing conflict has displaced millions and sparked urgent calls for international mediation.
