Toronto – Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, led a delegation to Russia to attend the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum.
On Friday, he held talks with Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.
“Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of #Ethiopia Gedion Timothewos hold talks on the sidelines of the First Ministerial Conference of the #RussiaAfrica Partnership Forum,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry wrote on its X page.
According to a disclosure from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions focused on bilateral, regional, and global affairs. An agreement was reached between the two countries to enhance “bilateral cooperation and utilize the untapped potential of their economic relations.”
The Ministerial Conference is scheduled to take place from November 9 to 10. Many other African countries are attending the forum.
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also disclosed that Gedion met with his Algerian counterpart on the sidelines of the Ministerial Conference. They reportedly reached an agreement to “enhance bilateral relations across a broad range of cooperation areas.”
The First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership was organized just weeks after what was described as a successful BRICS conference held in Kazan, also in Russia.
Ethiopia was accepted as a BRICS member earlier this year. Over the past six years, the country has faced a security crisis in many areas, particularly in the Oromia region, where kidnappings and massacres of the ethnic Amhara population have been recurring.
Additionally, Ethiopia fought a devastating war in the northern parts of the country, affecting three regions: Afar, Amhara, and Tigray. The war was fought between the federal government and TPLF forces, with as many as one million people reportedly killed. Currently, there is an ongoing conflict in the Amhara region.
Externally, Ethiopia is facing increasing tensions with Somalia and Eritrea, with whom Russia maintains friendly relations. As mentioned above, Ethiopia and Russia discussed regional matters during their bilateral meeting in Sochi. However, the stance on the tension with Somalia over access to the sea remains unclear.
Russia itself has been engaged in the ongoing war against Ukraine, which was once part of the USSR. Multiple reports indicate that Russia has recently made significant gains in Donetsk and reclaimed a significant portion of its land in Kursk, which Ukraine invaded in August this year.

Gatherings like this one look so funny to me. I get a kick out of them. All the murderer of babies, expecting women and the elderly from his lush palace in Moscow has to do is yell ‘kibbles n bits, kibble n bits’ to be surrounded by a herd of tail wagging stray dogs. So, I now declare Moscow a world class and 1st rated shelter for abandoned dogs. Kibbles n bits, kibble n bits, kibble n bits!!!! I told you; I am now surrounded suddenly by stray dogs!!!!
