Ethiopians Across The Country Celebrating The 2018 New Year

Ethiopian New Year

Toronto – Ethiopians across the country celebrating the Ethiopian New Year, Enkutatash. It is 2018, it is one of the exciting times of a year.   The inauguration of GERD is planned to coincide with the eve of the new year.

However, the country is still experiencing conflict in Oromia and Amhara regions, not to mention many other challenges.

Religious leaders and politicians have shared new year messages.

His Holiness Abune Mathias I Patriarch of Ethiopia, Archbishop of Axum and Echegie of the See of  St. TekleHaimanot, has conveyed a message for the new year for all Ethiopians in the country and abroad.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Media quoted HIs Holiness as saying “While people are created to live on earth, to prevent them from living causes a conflict with the will of God. The primary challenge that is tormenting our world in our time is the tendency to prevent people from living. If this kind of tendency didn’t exist in the world, an immeasurable amount of money would not be spent to produce weapons for destroying human life in a world where there are hundreds of millions of poor people.”

He ended his message calling Ethiopians to pray in the new year.  “Let us pray that the New Year may be a good and successful time for the peace and development of our country, for the unity and agreement of our people, and for the resolution of disagreements through justice and reconciliation,” he said.

Politicians, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Fano leaders and opposition party leaders have conveyed a New Year message too.

In a message he shared on his social media page, Abiy Ahmed says “2018 is a year during which we work to make Ethiopia’s rise more rooted and has foundations.”

The prime minister has been exhibiting a pattern of dismissing his detractors and opposition groups as enemies. In his new year message, he insinuated that his opponents are birds who can not rise like an eagle. Seemingly, he sees his party as an eagle that could rise to greater heights.

The Fano forces and opposition parties have announced intentions to make unity the core objective towards which they are working with the aim to end Abiy Ahmed’s government.

They have been accusing his government of bringing unbearable economic and security hardships to Ethiopians, among other challenges.

  1. I want to wish all my countrymen/women a Happy Ethiopian New Year.

Let’s all also have in our thoughts and prayers all those who perished on this day by a heinous and dastardly acts of demonic terrorists in which we also had lost three members of our own Diaspora. They were:
    1) Dr. Yeneneh Betru – A highly educated physician and a respected scientist.
    2) Eskedar Melaku – Another highly educated member of our Diaspora and a vice president at a global professional services firm.
    3) There was news about a 3rd member of our Diaspora who was killed at the World Trade Center. I hope someone will tell us the name of that victim.

May All Rest in Eternal Peace!!!!

  2. Happy New Year & Happy GERD Week! So, ONE for the New Year & the GERD→1, 2, 3, Bottoms UP! Ethiopia delivered!

“We Deliver Even on Sundays”: I stole that from Utah Jazz’s fans at the basketball match with LA Lakers(!?) in the 1990s. The Lakers had huge lead over Jazz in Jazz’s turf. So, Laker’s fans were mocking Jazz fans with posters like “Where is the mailman* [Karl Malone]? The mailman is late! …” [mailman*: Karl also ran a parcel delivery business]

Jazz’s fans watched quietly till Karl started 3-pointers from downtown [mid field] and took the lead. Then, Jazz fans put up their poster: “We Deliver Even On Sundays!” So, did Ethiopia against all odds.

Anyway, these two caught my attention and wanted to share them with you all:
