Toronto – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) shared a new release on Friday in which it indicated that  “The situation in the eastern part of Amhara deteriorated further at the end of September, when a sudden escalation of hostilities in the North Wollo zone led to large numbers of casualties, captured fighters and other severe humanitarian consequences.”

The Humanitarian Organization indicated that it has deployed teams in response to the humanitarian crisis in North Wollo, which is linked to the conflict between government forces and Fano forces.

Two team ICRC deployed in Lalibela and Woldia area for over six days. 16 seriously injured government soldiers were evacuated.

It was Fano Forces who handed over the wounded soldiers to ICRC, according to the news release.

“The soldiers were handed to the ICRC by the Amhara Fano across the front line and taken to Woldiya town, where they were transferred to government forces. On 9 October, staff also visited detainees held by Amhara Fano in North Wollo,” it said in its news release.

Leader of the ICRC team deployed to the area, Martin Thalmann, is cited as saying that “Many people have been killed or wounded in North Wollo in recent days.”  He was deployed to the Kulmeks and Muja area, near Lalibela, where intense battle was reported about two weeks ago.

Notably Borkena recently reported that over 470 government soldiers were killed and more that 170 wounded in Beklo Manekia locality of Lalibela area.

The ICRC has also stated that it has visited government soldiers captured during the recent Fano operation. Six IRCR delegates visited remote locations in North Wollo where the captured soldiers are held.

The organization has assessed the conditions of captured soldiers, including the treatment they receive from Fano forces. The news release unspecified their condition. Fano forces have been hailed in the past for their treatment of captured soldiers.

There have been recurring instances, from the reports Borkena published in the recent past,  where the fano forces paid for transpiration costs of captured soldiers who wish to reunite with their families.

The Amhara region of Ethiopia has been experiencing conflict between Abiy Ahmed’s government and the Fano forces since August 2023. The government plan was to end the operation within two weeks. As it turns out, the war is still raging and there does not seem to be an end in sight as military action does seem to fail to address the security situation and there is no active negotiation process to end it.

Apart from economic devastation, widespread rights abuse and civilian deaths, well over 4 million students are out of school in the region.
