Ethiopian Prime Minister Visits Italy To Discuss “Economic Partnership”

Toronto – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed headed to Italy for a working visit after concluding his trip to France

He  wrote on his social media page that he met with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome. Apart from discussion on multilateral cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties, investment and economic partnership  agenda were discussed during the meeting. 

“We reaffirmed our shared commitment to deepening collaboration across sectors, guided by mutual respect and the longstanding friendship between our two nations,” the Prime Minister said. 

However, specifics of the discussion on investment and economic cooperation is undisclosed. Italian government sources indicated that there are initiatives in the water sector, supporting health care infrastructure, and sustainable agriculture which is part of “Mattei Plan for Africa.” 

As well, the Italian Government Presidency of the Council of Ministers Office reported that ” President Meloni also expressed appreciation for the ongoing impactful economic reforms, which are allowing Ethiopia to continue on a path of growth and increased Italian investments, based on long-standing, fruitful economic collaboration.”

The Italian Prime Minister has reportedly confirmed to visit Addis Ababa at the end of July  to co-chair the United Nations Food Security Summit  which is scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa on 28 July.

At the end of the meeting, President Meloni confirmed her intention to visit Ethiopia in order to co-chair, together with Prime Minister Abiy, the United Nations Food Security Summit which will be held in Addis Ababa on 28 July.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also met with Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican. 

Abiy Ahmed, widely criticized for what many call the genocidal war in the Amhara region of Ethiopia and the ongoing conflict in the Oromia region, disclosed that he discussed  “shared commitment to global peace” with the new pope.  The Vatican official news sources did not remark on it except saying “Pope Leo XIV welcomed the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali, to a private audience in the Apostolic Palace this morning.” 

The Vatican also disclosed hat Abiy Ahmed  “presented the Pope with coffee from the country as he said ‘to remember Ethiopia’  “
