Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has publicly expressed his appreciation to Getachew Reda for his two years of service as head of the Interim Regional Administration (IRA) of Tigray. In a statement delivered in Tigrigna, Abiy acknowledged Getachew’s contributions to maintaining peace and stability in the region during a critical transitional period following the Pretoria Peace Agreement of November 2, 2022.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Reda’s appointment was in line with the Ethiopian constitution and the peace agreement between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). He assured that future cooperation on joint initiatives would continue and thanked Getachew for his time in the role.
This expression of gratitude comes amidst a period of uncertainty regarding Tigray’s leadership. Getachew Reda was among 16 senior members recently expelled from the TPLF leadership in September 2024, a move orchestrated by Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD). This internal power struggle has led to speculation about who will lead the region next. It remains unclear whether Prime Minister Abiy will appoint a new head or seek a renewed political understanding with the current TPLF leadership.
Getachew Reda had been a vocal critic of Abiy Ahmed during the two years war between the TPLF led Tigray regional administration and the Federal government. The party split into two after about a year or so of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostility Agreement which ended the war. The faction under Debretsion Gebremichael is said to be unhappy with the agreement. Getachew, a member of the Interim Administration whose term officially ended in February this year, advocated for the implementation of the agreement.

Abiy Ahmed has no business in Tigray, the old nation and regional power. He knows that the mighty Tigray can dislodfge him if it needs to do so. As a civilized nation, Tigray is respecting the Pretoria agreement with all its flaws but Abiy Ahmed is backtracking. Instead of demanding surrender, Tigray chose the path of diplomacy and International law. This is the agreement that saved his government from total defeat and gave him breathing space. Now true Tigrayans are in charge in Tigray and they will not tolerate any more provocative actions. However, Tigray will remain comitted to Oromia which is its gift to the Oromo people. The liberation forces of Tigray have liberated Oromia and put it on the path of self rule and development.
