Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reiterated his country’s support for South Sudan as political tensions rise within its leadership. The message came after Abiy met with South Sudanese Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel, who delivered a letter from President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
After their meeting, PM Abiy stressed the need for a collaborative, regional effort to help South Sudan navigate its current political and security challenges. “Ethiopia stands firmly with the people of South Sudan,” he said, pledging continued support for the country’s stability and unity.
The visit comes at a critical time, as tensions between President Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar have escalated dramatically. Kiir’s government has accused Machar of inciting rebellion and placed him under house arrest — a move that has sparked concern among international observers and raised fears of renewed ethnic conflict.
The ongoing political rift is straining the already fragile peace agreement that ended South Sudan’s devastating civil war between 2013 and 2018. Tensions are further inflamed by Uganda’s military presence in the country — a move strongly criticized by Riek Machar’s allies, who argue it breaches the international arms embargo and undermines the peace process.
Observers say President Kiir appears to be tightening his grip on power as internal divisions deepen and questions around future leadership intensify. In response to the growing crisis, the African Union and regional leaders are ramping up diplomatic efforts to help stabilize the situation and prevent a return to widespread violence.
