Toronto – The office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday announced that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Tadesse Worede, President of the Tigray Region Interim Administration in the morning hours.

It is indicated that Tadesse presented an annual report and a discussion was held on the findings.

However, the office of the Prime Minister did not disclose further information as to what the findings were and the remarks from the Federal government.

Defense Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, attended the meeting.

When Tadesse Worede was named as president of Interim Administration on April 30, 2025, disarming the TPLF combatants and return of displaced people in the region were among the key missions he was given.

Opposition parties operating in the Tigray region and outside of it had been criticizing Tadesse for what they considered to be “poor performance” on the  basis of the missions he was given.

There have been recurring protests in the region including from members of the armed groups under TPLF and public servants over unpaid salaries.

The Federal government allegedly withheld budget transfer to the region in late 2025. It was claiming that money that should be spent on government service delivery was rather channeled to pay for the armed groups which are mostly still under the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

About two years ago, the TPLF chairperson claimed to have over 200,000 armed forces.

Tadesse Worede was also given the mandate to end what the Federal government says is an illegal relation with foreign forces that would undermine the sovereignty  of Ethiopia.  The reference was to the new alliance between the TPLF and Eritrean government. However, the relationship persisted.

There have been fears of renewed conflict between the Federal government and the TPLF which now has the backing of the Eritrean government.

The office of the Prime Minister is yet to make public its assessment of Tadesse Worede’s report. However, there are unconfirmed reports that he is offered a six months extension of his power.

Opposition forces allege that he has a tendency to lean towards the TPLF forces.
