Toronto – The Federal House of People’s Representatives ( HOPRE) on Wednesday announced Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will appear in the Parliament on Thursday to address questions from members of the parliament.
According to the HOPRE , Abiy Ahmed will be responding to questions regarding the opening speech of President Taye Atske Selassise during the joint session of the HOPRE and the House of Federation.
The Practice in Ethiopian Parliament is that Members of Parliament will submit questions in writing and they will read from the same script during the questions and answers session.
Over 95 percent of members of the parliament are from the ruling “Prosperity Party.” It means that Abiy Ahmed’s party could essentially get away with any decision without a meaningful challenge in the parliament.
The ongoing war in the Amhara and Oromia region of Ethiopia, the recent devaluation of the Ethiopian currency which added fuel to the already rising cost of living ,and the forceful displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents of Addis Ababa under the guise of “corridor development” contributed to the worsening legitimacy crisis of Abiy Ahmed’s party.
According to recent reports from local sources, the government had assessment that a protest could break out in the capital Addis Ababa.
On the other hand, the government still makes claims that “Ethiopia is transitioning to prosperity.”
