Toronto – Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed’s nearly an hour long talk reveals there was an attempt to disrupt the construction of Ethiopia’s Great Ethiopain Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Walta Addis, state-owned media, aired the content on Sunday. Among the claims the Prime Minister made, “plus or minus 15,000 armed groups were trained by external forces and deployed” near the project site to disrupt the construction. He said the dam was also built by blood.
He led government officials to the site on the occasion of the third and fourth turbine inauguals. It is apparent that he has exploited this to make a case that his government is working towards “prosperity.”
With three wars (two of them still ongoing), prevalent security problems and chronic economic hardship, Abiy Ahmed has noticeably lost his political support base and has been facing a legitimacy crisis.
