Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) Accuses Ruling System of Using “Religion Card”

Nairobi, Borkena – The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), in a statement issued on Sunday leveled serious accusations against the ruling Prosperity Party government, claiming it is employing what it calls “ultimate religion card” to incite conflict between communities.

The party strongly condemned the tragic murders of religious leaders recently committed in the towns of Dangla and Bati, and called on the faithful to protect themselves and their religion from attacks.

According to the EPRP statement, the regime has been deliberately working since it assumed power to create conflict and bloodshed among the Ethiopian people, who have lived together for centuries in brotherhood and mutual respect. The party noted that since this wicked conspiracy has not succeeded in setting the people against each other to the extent it desired, it is now escalating attacks targeting religious leaders. As evidence, the party cited the recent killing of Sheikh Sufyan Muhammed, the Imam of the Khutba Mosque in Dangla town, who was shot while returning home, as well as the killing of Priest Frew Habtamu, a servant of the Guaha Tsebah Abune Tekle Haimanot Church in Bati town, who died after gunfire was opened inside his residence on June 25, 2026.

In addition to these recent incidents, the party’s statement recalled the previous killings and displacements of Orthodox Tewahedo faithful and clergy in Wollega and Arsi. Similarly, it argued that the destruction of churches and mosques across Ethiopia under the guise of war, as well as the imprisonment of innocent people demanding justice, are sufficient evidence that the regime is actively implementing the religion card.

Due to the absence of a structure working to stop attacks against religious leaders and the faithful and to bring about justice, the EPRP urged that the people must organize and defend themselves and their faith. In particular, the party entrusted the followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo and Islamic faiths—who are victims of organized attacks—to continue strengthening their historical values of brotherhood and mutual respect while protecting each other from recurring plots of destruction.

Concluding its statement, the party expressed its condolences to the families and relatives of the slain religious leaders, Sheikh Sufyan Muhammed and Priest Frew Habtamu.

  1. This is a very serious allegation and must be independently investigated.
Once again, I call upon our dear editors of this esteemed website we all considered our go-to reliable news waterhole, to use their enormous journalistic capabilities and verify this sad and dangerous tragedy/crime. I remember stories your reporter sent from on location in Addis/Finfinnee.
    Dear Editors,

Inter religious conflict is the last conflict that country will never need. Since 1974 it has managed to avoid that successfully even though the Wahhabi extremists tried to ignite that on many occasions. But they have failed and failed miserably because that Muslim peasant and urban dweller told them no. They failed because those Christian peasants and urban dwellers said no. But it has been my worst fear and nightmare. I will anxiously wait for your honest and independent finding.
Blessings to you and your family
