Toronto – Prosperity party has been painting rosy pictures of better times ahead as Ethiopian people’s condition of living is worsening because of unending rise in the cost of living.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government continued spending on internal war and prestige projects the money borrowed from IMF and The World Bank at a cost of compromising Ethiopia’s policy sovereignty including on agreeing on a free fall depreciation of the Ethiopian birr.

Worse, this week the parliament – over 95 percent of which from the ruling Prosperity Party – passed legislation to introduce a heavy income tax on public servants. Over 4 million across the country will be impacted by it. There are also rumors that Abiy Ahmed’s government has plans to deepen the neoliberal policy recommendations from the monetary institutions (it is packaged as a homegrown economic growth package). Framed as “small government” one of the core neoliberal tenets is downsizing the public service and making more room for the “private sector.” According to the rumors, his government is planning a massive layoff from the public service.

How unbearable is the cost of living in Ethiopia? Getnet Worku, foreign relation head of Enat Party, (an opposition party has been very vocal against the ruling party policy choices, practices , inactions and actions) painted a vivid image of the grim circumstances under which Ethiopians are living. “99.9 percent of Ethiopians are suffering,” he said during his latest interview with Anchor media.
