Toronto – At least 13 Ethiopian fishermen were reportedly killed in a clash with Kenyan fishermen, while 22 Kenyan fishermen are missing following the incident.
VOA Amharic, citing Kenyan police and government authorities, reported that the clash occurred along the Ethiopian-Kenyan border near the South Omo Zone of Ethiopia.
Tadele Haate, head of the Dasench District in the South Omo Zone administration, confirmed through family members that 13 Ethiopians were killed. At the time of this report, only one body had been recovered.
On the Kenyan side, authorities stated that 22 individuals remain missing.
According to sources, the clash erupted between the Dasench community in Ethiopia and the Turkana community in Kenya over the alleged theft of fishing nets.
The exchange of fire between the two communities began on Sunday around 8 a.m. and continued until 3 p.m. However, tensions had reportedly been building since Thursday.
The conflict took place in the Lopmukat and Natira localities near the Ethiopian-Kenyan border. The exact cause and circumstances of the clash remain unclear.
In addition to the fatalities, up to 15 boats were stolen. Six fishermen from the Dasench community in Ethiopia were abducted but were later freed by Turkana police, according to the VOA Amharic report, which cited local authorities.
Kenya has reportedly deployed additional forces to the border area in response to the incident.
