Toronto – The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRCO)  on Tuesday released a statement calling for an “adequate” government response to rights abuses in different parts of the country.

One of the issues mentioned in the statement was the killing of Orthodox Christians in Arsi, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

It said it has learned from information it gathered that the majority of Orthodox Christians were killed in East  Arsi zone Guna, Merti, Sherka and Holonto districts  on the night of October 24 to 25.  Muslims and followers of other religions were also killed in the same province.

The number is unspecified. Notably, Borkena reported that over 25 civilians, mostly Orthodox Christians, were massacred in those districts.

As well, EHRCO confirmed that on November 4  five other farmers were killed in Merti district Godo locality as they were returning to harvesting Teff. These victims were also Orthodox Christians. Borkena has confirmed that one of the victims was a ten years old boy.

On Monday, Inter Religious Council Of Ethiopia released what it called the first report from investigation into the killings in East Asri making claims that the victims were not “from one faith group.”

The council’s claim has angered many including the dioceses in the Arsi region where there had been recurring killings.

In a recent interview with Anchor Media, Yilkal Getnet, a prominent Ethiopian politician currently in the United States, harshly criticized the council that it does have a mandate to investigate the massacre.

According to the EHRCO report, it was the armed groups behind the killings.  Notably, radical ethnic Oromo nationalists extensively in the Oromia region and had been linked to numerous massacres and kidnappings in the region.

EHRCO report was explicit that most of the killings in Arsi, Oromia, targeted followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

A coalition of six major Ethiopian opposition groups had called for an independent investigation into the killing.
