Toronto – Local news sources in Ethiopia reported that the Federal government has started deploying Federal police forces to the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

Deploying forces started on Tuesday, according to the source. However, the number of police forces being deployed is unspecified.

Federal Forces are entering the region to protect Federal government institutions and infrastructures including the airports in different cities, banks, Ethio Telecom and Ethiopian Electric Power Institutions.

The Pretoria agreement has a provision for the Federal Forces to enter the region. However, it has not been implemented for more than two years after the agreement was signed.

The tension between the Federal government and a faction of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is heighted. Fears are high that war could start anytime.

On Wednesday,  the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia announced the official removal of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) from political parties’ registry after the latter repeatedly failed to comply with regulatory guidelines and legislations governing political parties. The decision came after extended months of warning and suspensions.

The Federal government has been accusing Debretsion’s faction of “working with external forces to stir conflict in the region.”
