Toronto – 23 civilians are reportedly killed and four others injured where a minibus carrying 27 passengers was hit by DShK.
According to an Ethiopian Media Services (EMS) report – which cited residents from the area – the minibus was traveling from Gundowoyn to Bahir Dar. The Minibus was ditched to Abaya river, the source added.
The source did not specify as to when exactly the incident happened. Residents from the area are cited as saying that government forces carried out the attack.
Yohanned Alemayehu, deputy public relation head of Gojam Fano, on Thursday spoke to EMS. He confirmed the attack.
The source added that the attempt to get remarks from the Ethiopian Defense Force was unsuccessful.
On Thursday, the Defense Force shared a news update on its social media page saying that it has killed two “gunmen of the extremist group” near Bahir Dar area. The Defense Force allege, citing Colonel Zerihun Terefe who is the commander of the Defense force Division posted deployed in the area, that “they were engaged in robbery in the area.”
Meanwhile, the deputy Fano spokesperson in Gojjam told EMS that there has been intense fighting between Fano forces and joint government forces in many parts of Gojjam over the past few days.
As well, there is a reported tension in Bahir Dar the details of which are unspecified. A new curfew has been imposed in the city for several weeks now as Fano forces presence in locations close to the city is increasing.
Earlier this week, other Ethiopian local news sources reported Fano forces were able to sneak into Bahir Dar and kidnap government intelligence officers.
These past few weeks the government deployed massive forces to different parts of the Amhara region as the rainy season appears merciless in many parts of the region. There were reported incidents of flooding and landslides but the number of victims were unspecified.
In Shoa, near Debre Berhan city, there is military tension – according to an EMS report – as government forces have mobilized to the area a mechanized defense force. It is reported that fighting could break out any time.
Gonder and Wollo parts of Amhara region have also witnessed fighting, as was the case for most part of the last one year, between Fano and government forces.
Credible sources with links in the Amhara region indicate that government forces are withdrawing their forces from districts in the Amhara region and concentrating its forces in and around zonal towns.
However, there are also reports of an internal division within the movement that appears to have an appearance of struggle for power and hegemony. Yet, observers – especially those who seem to have credible information about the movement – are still expressing optimism about the military power that Fano force forged over the past one year.
