Toronto – The Ethiopian government has reportedly carried out a drone strike on school in Sekela, Gojjam, Amhara region of Ethiopia.
From sources with links to the region, the attack targeted Agut Elementary School. It took place on Tuesday around 8: 00 A.M.
What is known so far regarding casualties is that a woman who was close by the school is wounded.
Fano sources reported that the woman was cutting grass in the school premises during the attack. It was not immediately disclosed if her condition is life threatening.
Sources say the human causality was minimal, especially compared to previous drone attacks in the region, for the attack took place at a time when there was no movement of people.
Borkena was unable to confirm if the school has accepted students for this academic year. As reported recently, more than 4 million students are out of school in the region.
However, it is confirmed that part of the school block where the students used to have discussion is badly damaged. Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) shared a picture purportedly showing the school after the attack.
Notably, the Human Rights Organization had been reporting that schools in many areas of the Amhara region had become makeshift camps for troops.
It is not for the first time for the Ethiopian Defense Force to target school facilities. It appears that the Defense force tends to think that schools are used by Fano forces as camps.
Amhara advocacy organizations based in the United States have been documenting the level of damage and killings of civilians in the region.
There had been well over 100 drone strikes in the region since the start of the conflict. Hundreds of civilians were killed in drone strikes including a pregnant woman who was getting maternal care when a health facility was targeted in Sanka, North Wollo area.
The Ethiopian government has not remarked about the drone attack in Sekela.
From experiences over the past two and half years, Ethiopian government forces launch drone strikes after losing battles. The Fano forces in the area were claiming a significant victory over government forces this Week.
