Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopia’s Federal Police says it has intensified crackdown on what it calls “individuals and groups, both domestically and abroad, using social media to destabilize the country.”
This announcement comes from a discussion held this week on a security plan prepared to ensure “peace and security” for major international, continental, and national events to be hosted in Ethiopia over the next three months, from July 2025 to September 2026.
In a statement issued on July 23, the Federal Police also warned that it will “continue to intensify efforts to bring individuals and groups attempting to create chaos and instability to justice.”
Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael of the Ethiopian Federal Police, who led the discussion, stressed the importance of strengthening and continuing the operation to bring to justice individuals and groups, both from abroad and within the country, who are conducting social media campaigns designed to make Ethiopia a center of “chaos and instability.”
Commissioner General Demelash stated “to ensure the peaceful execution of Ethiopia’s upcoming three-month-long major international, continental, and national events, it is essential to lead and coordinate deployment in an organized manner, starting from the welcoming of guests.”
“Searches and inspections will be conducted in Addis Ababa and its surroundings, as well as at all entry and exit checkpoints,” the statement read, adding that its primary focus is on “anti-peace forces.”
High-level leaders from the Ethiopian National Defense Force, the Ethiopian Federal Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republican Guard, the National Intelligence and Security Service, and the Addis Ababa Police attended the discussion
The Commissioner further urged all security institutions to work in coordination 24/7 to control and stop organized crimes.
