Toronto – The Ethiopian Defense Force on Monday announced that Fikru Muluye, a prominent Fano military figure in the North Wollo area, “accepted the government’s peace call and surrendered.”
According to a Defense news release, the fano commander surrendered along with his body guards whose number is unspecified in the report.
He reportedly surrendered in Lalibela town, one of the major tourist destinations in the region.
He was a commander of a corps within the Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM) Asaminew Tsige Command – which has been operating in the area.
A picture purportedly showing him seated along with his bodyguards and Ethiopian Defense Force Commanders was shared on social media.
The organization has not yet resealed a statement on the claims from the Defense force. However, stories are now emerging on social media that there had been a divergence between Fikru and other fano leaders in the area.
The Ethiopian Defense Force cited this as saying “Although we started the struggle with the aim to liberate Amhara, we observe implementation soberly and we learned that it is something that makes our people and country vulnerable to even more dangerous situations.” As well, he is cited as saying that “the problems should be resolved through peaceful means.”
The Fano forces started the struggle three years, as they say, to reverse existential threat against the Amhara people.
Human rights organizations and activists recorded recurring massacres targeting Amhara people in different parts of Ethiopia but the attacks were more frequent in the Oromia and Benishangul regions of Ethiopia.
Rights abuses were also recorded in the Amhara region especially after the Federal government launched what it calls “military operation to disarm Fano forces.” in August 2023.
Ethnic Amharas had been targeted by state and non-state actors in the Oromia region.
Meanwhile, AFNM is making claims of new military gains in Shewa region of Amhara. According to Fano sources who shared news releases on social media, the Menelik Command and Shewa Teklay Gizat command launched joint operations.
Asres Mare Damtie, one of the key AFNM leaders, said the operations were in “one of the edge of the Wollo plateau” without specifying the exact locations.
He added that 25 AK 47 and over 1200 Dsk ammunition were seized. Asres did not specify the number of losses on the part of the government forces.
