Toronto – Members of the Ethiopian Defense Force reportedly raped 35 students – from Sede Muja and Semada district – in the South Gondar area of Ethiopia last week.
Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) cited that on Tuesday, family members of the victims reported that the girls were high school students who sat for the grade 12 leaving examination at Debre Tabor University. They were writing the exams between Wednesday and Friday.
It happened on July 13, 2024. They were reportedly returning to their families escorted by members of the Defense Force. But girls were made to stay the night at the Defense Force camp in Guna district and sent to their parents in Sede Muja and Semada districts, a person, who identified himself as brother to one of the victims, told EMS.
Some of the students have reportedly informed their parents and taken them to hospital for examination. It does not seem to be the case that the incident is reported to authorities in the region.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not responded to the allegation. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission or any other human rights organizations in Ethiopia have not yet reported the incident.
Reputable human rights organizations have been reporting about extensive rights violations in the Amhara region of Ethiopia – including extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians and rape in some cases.
During the two years war between Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Abiy Ahmed’s Federal government, the Defense Force was implicated in extensive rape cases in the Tigray region.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government has been undertaking a military operation in the Amhara region of Ethiopia since August 2023. Hundreds of unarmed civilians have been killed so far and there does not seem to be an end in sight to the war.

Rapings of women are said to be committed by all sides. This is what my relatives who live in the capital Addis/Finfinne have told me about the extent of hardship citizens both in Amhara and Oromia are facing on top of the hardship they face just make a living. If you are one of those citizens in rural areas, consider yourself shot dead if you have an attractive daughter or even a young attractive wife. The armed thugs of the so-called ‘liberation’ army or ‘rebels’ will shoot you between the eyes and take away your daughter and wife. As I have said umpteen times in the past, there has never been anything that came out considered to be good out of armed struggle in our times. They have to be despotic and rule with the power that comes out of the barrels of their guns during their days in the bushes and that is what they bring with them if they succeed in their schemes. You want proof? All you have to do is just look around.
