Military Reports Heavy Casualties in Northeastern Front as Fano Claims Capture of Senior Army Officers

TORONTO, Canada — The Ethiopian Defense Force on Thursday said it killed over 272 TPLF forces and wounded 260 others in a counteroffensive operation in northeastern Ethiopia.
The news release from the defense force attributed the information to Lieutenant General Assefa Chekol, commander of the North East Command.
According to the defense force, TPLF forces launched an offensive on the night of September 22 along the North East Command mission zones starting at 3 a.m. The army repulsed the attack and seized machine guns and ammunition.
“A large number of group and individual military weapons were also captured in the counterattack conducted by our army. Accordingly, they include 04 DShK, 22 machine guns, 08 snipers, 50 Kalashnikov rifles, 03 RPG-7s, 10 Icom communication radios, 01 Type 77 communication radio, 03 DShK tripod legs, 11 Icom communication batteries, and 12 Icom chargers. In addition, while a large number of enemy forces were captured, 272 were killed and 260 enemy forces were wounded,” the defense force stated in a Facebook post.
The military also shared images of what it described as seized firearms and captured TPLF fighters, though the exact number of captured fighters remains unspecified.
The defense force expressed gratitude for community support in the operation area, though it did not specify the role played by residents.
Neither the TPLF nor the Alliance for Survival has remarked on the defense force’s claims, which have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, Fano forces on Thursday reported capturing two army colonels during operations in the North Wollo zone of the Amhara region.
According to the reports, Commander of the 61st Division of the 803rd Corps, Colonel Meles Ashagrie, and Deputy Commander Colonel Edmealem Amare were captured during operations against the Menelik Command of the Amhara Fano National Movement (AFNM), 1st Division, and 13th Corps.
Fano forces claimed they seized 27 DShKs, more than 20 patrol vehicles, seven mortars, several Bren guns, sniper rifles, Kalashnikovs, and ammunition boxes. They also reported seizing 10 Ural military trucks and destroying two others.
Fano narratives stated the military commanders were attempting to escape after losing a significant portion of their forces, though the group did not specify casualties on either side.
Video footage and photographs of the captured colonels and seized weaponry have circulated on social media since Wednesday.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not commented on the incident, and the claims remain unverified. Conflict across the Tigray and Amhara regions has escalated over the past three days following the formation of the Alliance for Survival.
