Most native Ethiopians living in the diaspora have a deep affection and strong attachment to Ethiopian daily life and national affairs because of their roots in Ethiopia’s culturally diverse and socially interconnected society.
Whenever national crises occur, Ethiopian Americans come together to contribute whatever they can to support their people in Ethiopia.
In the recent past, Ethiopian Americans in the Midwest, particularly in Missouri and Nebraska, have provided enormous economic, social, and emergency support to Ethiopians back home, including monthly remittances amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars for families and friends.
Among the many contributions recorded in American media, the following are notable highlights:
- Fundraising to ship academic books to Ethiopia in St. Louis, Missouri, in collaboration with African American Muslim communities.
- Hosting critically ill Ethiopians in their homes and providing transportation and other daily support services.
- Fundraising and sending assistance for deported Ethiopians from Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
- Organizing conferences to raise awareness and publishing books on COVID-19 and pandemic diseases.
- Establishing conflict mediation councils and providing formal training in conflict resolution among community members and with other groups.
Ethiopian Americans also contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a project that is a source of pride for all Africans.
Let us continue these meaningful efforts that create a strong bridge of connection with our fellow Ethiopians at home. Such actions can serve as a model and lasting legacy for future generations to continue with pride and unity.
