Toronto – Ethiopian Citizens Social Justice Party (EZEMA), whose leader Birhanu Nega is serving as cabinet member in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, has been receiving criticism for being “an opportunist.”
Clearly the party does not see itself that way. It is claiming that it is providing constructive criticism in Abiy Ahmed’s government. In his latest meeting with political parties, Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed attempted to diffuse the criticism against EZEMA when he said that Berhanu Nega, the leader, is always challenging government positions during cabinet meetings.
EZEMA was one of the parties that attended the recent meeting with the Prime Minister. Abebe Akalu, Party Secretary, had an interview with Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) regarding the recent meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He said the party posed four key questions. One of them was that Abiy Ahmed’s government structure has elements that are contributing to the crisis ( security and otherwise) in the country. It also asked that the main problem that caused the situation in the country is ethnic politics.
On the issue of National dialogue, the EZEMA pointed out that ruling party cadres are dominating conversations that the National Dialogue Commission is organizing.
