Toronto – Ethiopians Christians across the country are celebrating Christmas, along with the rest of the Orthodox Christians in the World.
The eve of the holiday was particularly in the capital Addis Ababa. Ye Aelatat Zemare – which has become a feature of the celebration in Addis – attracted an estimated millions of participants.
Lalibela – one of Ethiopia’s popular tourist destination – is another location where the religious aspect of the Christmas celebration attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across the country.
On January 7 the cultural feature of the holiday sets in after church services. A pig part of it is festive food. Doro wot and slaughtering of lamb or goat, and kircha. The spiraling cost of living has made it difficult for the absolute majority of people to afford any of this.
His Holiness Abune Mathias conveyed, from the patriarchate in Arat Kilo, a Christmas message to Ethiopians in the country and abroad. The feast of nativity is a period during which God’s peace and love to mankind is declared, he said.

“we convey our fatherly call in the name of God to celebrate the holiday by praying and thinking about our country’s peace for the sake of the Glory of God and honour of our country’s unity and absolute peace of the people as well as by supporting our compatriots who are lacking food, clothing and shelter for various reasons,” he said in his message.
“God seeks our peace and love. There is no better proof for it than his incarnation – God becoming man and appearing between us,” He added.
It has been customary that his message focus on peace and unity, and his message during this Orthodox Christmas was not an exception.
Active conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia continue to claim lives. Millions are displaced due to conflict. And another conflict is brewing in the North, as several opposition political parties and influential leaders in the Tigray region have been pointing out, as the TPLF prepares for another round of war – this time with an alleged political and military alliance with the Eritrean government.
Field hockey like game, locally known as “Ye Gena Chewata” used to be a core the cultural aspect of the holiday. No any more except in some areas of the country side.
