Toronto – Ethiopian Athlete Tigist Assefa got a silver medal in the Women Marathon on Sunday at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025.

She was outsprinted by Kenyan athlete Peres Jepchirchir in the race to the finish line. Peres finished the distance at 2:24:43, outpacing Tigist by two seconds only.

Tigist finished the distance in 2:24:45.  Tigist was seen calm and collected after crossing the finishing line with no noticeable sense of regret.

“I don’t like to think I lost gold,” Tigist told World Athletics website in an interview after the race. Tigist is a champion of women only marathon race and has a record of 2:15:50 hours.

The source also quoted her as saying   “I had some difficulties in my preparation for Tokyo, taking a long rest after breaking the world record at the London Marathon this year, so I’m just happy I finished the race with the silver medal.”

On the other hand, this year’s World Athletics Championships Women Marathon Champion told the source that she did not expect to win.  Jepchirchir said “I really did not expect to win.”

She did not run a marathon throughout the season before the Tokyo World Championship. “…when I saw I was 100 metres from the finish, I just started to kick. I found some hidden energy,” she told World Athletics.

Uruguayan athlete Julia Paternain  claimed the bronze medal crossing the finishing line in 2:27: 23 hours.

Featured below is CBC video of the final few minutes of the race.

  1. So for so good for sons and daughters. The old country is the 3rd most decorated in this game in the total medal count. It is below Good Ole USA and Italy and the highest from Africa. We have the biggest one coming tomorrow at 05:30PM Tokyo time, 02:30AM, 04:30AM, 03:30AM, 02:30AM and 01:30AM USA time zones. Unless something sudden and unexpected issue popped up, the old country has very strong team competing in the Marathon, the old country may sweep all three medals clean. Our Eritreans may also do the same. I will be cheering for both including the Kenyans and USA if they come into a strong lead. .

  2. Well, our boys didn’t do as expected. Two of the best did not even finish the race. Kenyans have not done well either. All of Ethiopian and Kenyan runners were nowhere to be seen. May be the weather has affected them. But the winner is a Tanzanian in a photo finish.

    See ya next time somewhere.

  3. Well, our sons and daughters did not find their mojo to pile up more medals this time. The gold medal was not in their reach. May be the weather has affected them. But in my heart they are all champions. See ya in Los Angeles in 2028.
