Toronto – Ethiopian Airline generated $7 billion in revenue in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, and it is expecting $8 billion for the current fiscal year.

Bole International Airport has been fully expanded and is accommodating only 25 million passengers a year. With a growing number of international destinations and fleet, Ethiopian airlines is working on a mega airport project which will be constructed about 44 kilometers outside of the capital Addis Ababa.

In an interview with BBC Focus on Africa, Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Mesfin Tassew, shared details about the project.

When fully completed the mega Airport will have a capacity for up to 110 million passengers a year. With dozens of destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, the airport is expected to be a hub for passengers for  intra-continental flights and connections flights outside of the continent.

“It will be developed in two phases,” Mesfin Tassew told BBC Focus on Africa. In phase one, the part of the airport that will accommodate 60 million passengers will be completed. The work for the remaining 50 million passengers a year will be completed in phase two of the construction.

“Phase one will be completed by 2029,” he said.

It will be constructed on 3500 hectares of land.

He also said that 2500 households will be relocated from the area. They are, almost exclusively, farming communities outside of Bishoftu (Debre Zeit.)

Asked “what is being done for residents who will be relocated?”, he stated “we are building residential houses for the farmers.”

The airline is also working on building facilities for economic activity from where those relocated will earn a living.  According to the CEO, Agro-processing  facilities and trading facilities will be organized.

The plan is , based on what the CEO revealed, to relocate the farming communities from what will be a project site by November 2025.

Groundbreaking work for the construction is expected to start by the end of November 2025.

Ethiopian Airlines has been expanding international destinations and fleets over the past few years. Over the past few weeks, it introduced new destinations including to Hanoi, Vietnam where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made a four days working visit last week.

  1. Brother Mesfin bin Tassew is another genius that the old country can proudly call my son. From what I heard, he is doing everything right in the construction of this mega airport which must be built. He is making sure that those who now live on the site are well and properly compensated even before the construction begins. It is natural that when building such a mega project, it is impossible to make everyone happy. That includes you bigots and connivers who have been blowing your stinking dragon breaths from Minnesota, LA, Tennessee, Toronto, Oslo and Down Under. Take a walk!!!

Right on Brother Mesfin, right on!!!
