Toronto – Ethiopian Airlines on Tuesday announced that it has purchased six Boeing 787 Dreamliner. They are intended for international route expansion and enhance its cargo capacity.

Rise in the demand for long-haul travel is cited among the factors for the decision.

“Ethiopian Airlines will use the 787-9 jets to expand its intercontinental network from Addis Ababa and increase cargo capacity as demand for long-haul travel continues to rise,” it said in a press statement it released on Tuesday.

The new purchase is painted as a manifestation of Africa’s largest Airlines, Ethiopian’s “sustainable growth and preparation for further achievements.”

Mesfin Tassew, the CEO, remarked “Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us.”

The delivery time of the purchased planes, cost and payment arrangement is unspecified in Ethiopian Airlines’ press release.

Last week, the United States expressed interest in “supporting” Ethiopia’s  transport sector during the meeting between Ben Black, Chief Executive Officer of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), and Ethiopia’s Minister for Finance, Ahmed Shide, in Washington D.C.. (The minister is seen in the picture above fourth- left to right – in the back row)

Ethiopian Airlines sees the 787 Dreamliner as versatile with “reduced fuel use.” It said  it “enables Ethiopian Airlines to efficiently transport passenger’s point-to-point across Africa while accommodating cargo in the belly of the airplane for high-demand trade lanes.”

The airline has Africa’s  largest 787 Dreamliner fleet.

Notably, the airline was compelled to cancel hundreds of flights to the Middle East and the Gulf region as a result of the Iran war. The weekly revenue loss was estimated to be over $137 million.  However, the airlines resorted to its contingency plan of cargo service to the other parts of the world and was able to recover losses.

According to the latest disclosure, Ethiopian currently has 145 international destinations and owns more than 170 planes with an average fleet age of seven years.
