Toronto – The Ethiopian Airlines on Saturday released a brief update on its social media page regarding a reported fire incident at Mumbai International Airport.

“On August 16th morning, at Mumbai Airport in India, a baggage container carrying baggage checked in for ET641 in the ramp area was observed with fire,” said the airlines.

From the update, the incident was not within the aircraft. It happened at the ramp as the luggage containers were being transported from  “baggage make-up area to the aircraft,” the airline said.

Emergency response  for Mumbai airport ( The Airport Safety, Security, and Fire teams ) extinguished the fire immediately, according to the update from Ethiopian Airlines.

Authorities from Mumbai Airport have reportedly launched an investigation into the container and baggage that caught fire. It is unclear how it happened.

However, Ethiopian Airlines announced that the required safety procedures were completed for the aircraft to fly.

“The aircraft was dispatched following the standard safety procedures as nothing had happened at the aircraft side. We will provide updates as more information becomes available,” it said.

Furthermore, it said “We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

Ethiopian Airlines has recently been facing multiples of  sabotages apparently aimed at tarnishing its image and reputation.

  1. The number of cars on the road in Ethiopia is still quite low, about 1.2 million in total — or one car per 1,000 people. In the US, more than 91% of Americans own at least one car. In Africa’s most populous of country Nigeria, it’s 11.8 million cars total, or about 54 cars per 1,000 people. The Ethiopian government had kept car ownership rates low with its dramatically high taxes on gas-powered vehicles that cost consumers up to three times the value of car imports — part of an effort to get more people to use public transportation. “I look at electric vehicles exactly as we looked at the mobile telephone market 30 years ago,” Nderitu told CNN. “When the rest of the world started adopting mobile phones, there was no infrastructure (in Africa). There was a very small amount of people who were connected to phones. Today you look at Nairobi, you hardly find anybody without a phone.”

  2. We live in the era rechargeable batteries powering our cellphones, computers and many other gadgets we use daily. There are millions of sellers of such batteries and countless of companies that manufacture them. We have come to a point where we can’t function or live without them. Like any new breakthrough technology, they come with flaws. Overheating and catching fire of rechargeable batteries are common news these days. The fire they started have burned down cars and residential buildings. Even garbage bins are not left unaffected by such fires. We have read news when a bag containing such batteries catching fire on passenger and cargo planes. This could be one of such incidences. I am glad to hear that the fire was apprehended and put out before the plane took off. We should follow the instructions out there on how to pack our rechargeable gadgets whenever we travel using airplanes and ground transportation. Still, EAL is the best airline out there.
