Toronto – In a highly rated written message disseminated across multiple social media platforms, Gojjam Fano prominent leader Zemene Kassie called for the Fano forces to unite.
“Amhara Fano must unite,” he said in his message addressing the major Fano forces across the Amhara region by name.
“The Amhara Fano struggle has to unite without discerning Eskinder from Habte, Zemene from Dereje, Zinabu from Meketaw, Asres from Fantahun Muhabaw, Desalegne from Henok, Miere from Sami, Geta Asrade from Semeneh Mulatu. Differences of ideology, strategy and ideas will be reconciled through discussion. They will be trimmed,” Zemene wrote.
For him, all it takes to unite is a “spoonful of sincerity.”
Zemene Kassie apparently made the call from a sense of regret over the failure of the Fano forces to unite. “The world is laughing at and saddened by us for our failure to unite,” he said.
His message he released on Friday has been a talking point among Ethiopian activists and is trending in social media.
Despite a remarkable military success, as military analysts who appear on Ethiopian Channels like Anchor Media put it, the Fano forces have been extensively criticized, including by their supporters, over failure to unite their forces. Zemene Kassie himself was one of the Fano leaders widely criticized for the failure of Fano Unity.
His message was not just for Fano leaders. He also called on the support base in the country or abroad to end blaming grounds and leaders, and contribute their part to the Fano Unity.
Analysis and contents shared on social media regarding Fano division seems to suggest that the division among Fano forces has partly something to do with the power struggle to emerge as a dominant leader.
Currently, there are two major Fano umbrella organizations – Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) and Amhara Fano Popular Organization (AFPO). Many Fano leaders operate within these loosely organized structures leading their own Fano forces across the Amhara region of Ethiopia.
There were also indications of what appeared like “ideological” differences within the Fano forces. While there are groups of Fano who apparently see the liberation of Ethiopia as an end goal of the Fano armed struggle, there are also those who see the reverse of what they call existential threat to Amhara as the goal of the movement.
It has been a little over two years since the Fano forces started an armed struggle against the Abiy Ahmed led Prosperity government after the latter declared a military operation to “disarm” them.
The operation was intended to end within a few weeks. However, the operation is still underway. Fano forces continue to make claims of significant military success against the government.
The Defense force on its part has been claiming that it has eliminated over 90 percent of the armed forces which does not appear to be the case based on recent reports from Fano leaders operating in different parts of the Amhara region.
