Toronto – Fano forces have reportedly launched a major offensive in Woldia surroundings, North Wollo Amhara region of Ethiopia.
Ethio News, cited sources from the area to report that the fighting has been intense. Ethiopian Defense Force has deployed heavy artillery in Woldia town targeting areas that are said to be Fano combat positions surrounding the city.
Government forces reportedly shelled Wetek, Merto and Ezet from within Woldia city.
Mechare Meda, Merto Eyesus, Sewa Meda and Amaya areas – all surrounding Woldia city have experienced heavy fighting.
Residents are cited as saying “we have seen ambulances shuttling [to Woldia city hospital] carrying wounded.” However, the number of casualties or whether the casualties were on both sides or government sides is unknown.
The source also cited residents as saying that government officials including military commanders were seen withdrawing money from banks in anticipation that Fano forces might take over the city. There were also two banks that were robbed in the city by “unknown” gunmen when Fano forces were not in the city.
Apart from immediate areas surrounding Woldia city, intense battles are reported along the Addis Ababa- Mekele road south of Woldia city. Meta Ghiorthis, Sembo and areas between Sirinka and Woldia have experienced intense fighting. Again, the number of casualties are unspecified.
Abebe Fantaw, spokesperson of Wollo Fano, who spoke to Ethio News this week stated that Fano forces have encircled cities in many areas in North Wollo.
Fano forces in Wollo are also claiming that they launched a surprise attack in the North West of Wollo targeting Muja town in Gidan district. The attack was targeting commanders of the Defense Force, anti-riot and militia forces who were having a meeting at the time. The military general posted in the area reportedly escaped the attack after the meeting was disrupted. The source is unspecified if there were casualties from this particular operation.
In a related development, Fano forces in Gondar have reported ambush attacks in the central Gondar Belesa area. Government forces have experienced severe casualties. No causality is reported on the side of Fano. Further north in the Debark area , Fano forces claim to have killed over 20 government soldiers.
In the Shoa, Mida area, Fano forces continue to make claims of significant military gains in the area.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has not remarked on any of the above claims by Fano forces. It is rather making claims that it has achieved a significant military gain in East Gojjam, West Gojjam, Awi zone, and South Gondar areas of the Amhara region. It claimed that it had killed 1025 “extremists” and wounded another 574 from the battles in those areas.
The Ethiopian Defense Force has been making several claims for over a year now. Many of the areas in the Amhara region are still under Fano forces.
