Washington update – 50 State Strategy: A Call to Action

Washington update - 50 State Strategy

Washington update – by Mesfin Mekonen

We are launching a 50-State Strategy to mobilize Ethiopian Americans and friends of Ethiopia across the country. Each state will organize efforts to contact U.S. Senators and Members of Congress to raise awareness and demand action from the U.S. government.

What You Can Do

  1. Organize Locally
    Form or join a state-level advocacy group to coordinate outreach to your elected officials.
  2. Contact Your Senators and Representatives
    Call, write, and request meetings with your Senators and Members of Congress.
  1. Explain the worsening human rights situation in Ethiopia.
  2. Emphasize the atrocities being committed against Amhara civilians.
  3. Highlight the Ethiopian government’s suppression of democracy, unlawful killings, and mass imprisonment.

 You need to explain to the law makers in your states that at a time when Washington is focused on prioritizing its national interests, allowing Ethiopia to collapse would be a strategic failure. If the U.S. cedes influence in the Horn of Africa, China and Russia will fill the void. Preventing Ethiopia’s descent into chaos isn’t just a moral obligation—it is a crucial national security concern for the United States.

The regime in Ethiopia is rarely if ever truthful. It has always given the Ethiopian people empty words about democracy and about investing infrastructure projects that will create prosperity. The regime’s basic rule is to monopolize power in Ethiopia and to concentrate the nation’s wealth in its own hands.  All decisions on all issues are resolved following this basic rule.

The regime’s well documented violations of human rights and denial of the rule of law are a result of its adherence to this rule.  The corruption that has held back progress in Ethiopia is the consequence of having a regime in power that seeks only to enrich its members.

The Ethiopian-American community should make sure its voice is heard. Call and write to members of the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Affairs Committee urging them to support and draft a legislation on Ethiopia human rights violations

To express your support go to https://www.congress.gov/contact-us tofind your Representative’s and Senators’ contact information.

Dear Ethiopians and Friends of Ethiopia,

Below is a sample letter you can send to your Senators and Representatives as part of our 50-State Strategy. The time for action is now—if not now, when?

To contact your state elected officials, Congress.gov

Please take a moment to send this letter on behalf of the voiceless Ethiopians suffering back home. Your effort can make a difference.

With gratitude,

Mesfin Mekonen

Subject: Urgent Appeal to Prevent Civil War and Protect Human Rights in Ethiopia

Dear Senator / Representative,

I am writing as an Ethiopian American deeply concerned about the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia. I respectfully urge you to take immediate action to help prevent a civil war and to support peace, justice, and stability in the region.

First, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for your leadership and steadfast commitment to justice and human rights. Your continued advocacy offers hope to many Ethiopians and Ethiopian Americans.

We ask for your assistance in pressing the Ethiopian government to end the use of drones and other military actions targeting civilians. Reports of atrocities and widespread human rights abuses are deeply alarming. A stable, secure, and prosperous Ethiopia is vital not only for its people but also for regional and U.S. interests in the Horn of Africa.

The United States and the international community must stand firmly in support of fundamental human rights, the rule of law, and democracy for all Ethiopians—especially the Amhara people and Orthodox Christian Churches who are facing ongoing persecution. The continued silence of the international community in the face of daily atrocities committed by the regime of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed only emboldens further violence and instability.

We, Ethiopian Americans, urge the U.S. government to take a leading role in promoting peace and accountability by:

Condemning the abuses committed by the Ethiopian government;

Calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities;

Imposing targeted sanctions on those responsible for human rights violations; and

Supporting efforts toward a negotiated political settlement and the drafting of a new, inclusive constitution.

Your leadership at this critical time can help prevent further suffering and contribute to lasting peace and democracy in Ethiopia.

Thank you for your attention and for standing up for justice and human rights.

Sincerely,

Your resident state
