Toronto – Ethiopia on Thursday reported a viral haemorrhagic fever outbreak in Jinka, in the southern part of the country.
The Ministry of Health has announced, on Thursday, that eight cases have been suspected with the disease. Six patients are reportedly dead including two health workers.
It said that it is coordinating with the Public Health Institute and South Ethiopia region health office to “investigate the cause of the disease and launch a campaign to contain it. Emergency response is dispatched to Jinka while laboratory examinations are underway to determine the causes.
Furthermore, the Ministry stated that a community survey is underway to identify contamination and a house to house campaign to identify suspects. It is unspecified if the ongoing campaign is restricted to Jinka town or more areas in the South Ethiopia region.
The Ministry has shared recommended safety measures. It advised anyone experiencing bleeding from nose and other parts of the body, fever and diarrhea to go to health institutions right away. It also advised the public to avoid bodily contact with a person who is experiencing the symptoms, and washing hands with soap.
In an update published on Thursday, the World Health Organization said that it is “deploying an initial team of responders and delivering medical supplies to assist in the ongoing efforts to determine the cause of infection and halt further transmission,” to support Ethiopia’s response and investigation of the disease.
The UN health organization also said that it is sending essential supplies including protective supplies for health workers, and deployable isolation tents. In addition, it has announced that it has released US$ 300 000 from its Contingency Fund.
Viral haemorrhagic fever is in the category of diseases like Marburg and Ebola virus diseases, Crimean Congo and Lassa fever – according to a report from the World Health Organization.
