Borkena, Toronto — June 24, 2026 — A day after presenting his credentials to President Taye Aske Selassie, Uzbekistan’s non-resident ambassador Khodjaev Ashraf met with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hadera Abera.

The discussions focused on further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Economic cooperation in agriculture and agro-processing, mining, industrial development, and tourism, among others, was highlighted. Uzbekistan is considered to have extensive experience in cotton production and agricultural technology—an area where Ethiopia is seeking cooperation.

Another clear area of alignment is transport and logistics challenges, which both countries share as landlocked nations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said an agreement has been reached to “strengthen collaboration on transport corridor diplomacy and transit rights.”

According to a news release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia has urged Uzbekistan to open an embassy in Addis Ababa, which also hosts continental organizations, including the African Union. Ethiopia views this as important for deepening diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Hadera highlighted Uzbekistan’s “rapid economic growth” and its “strategic role in Africa” in advocating for the establishment of an Uzbek embassy in Ethiopia.

There was no further disclosure from the ministry regarding whether Uzbekistan is considering establishing an embassy-level diplomatic presence in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopia is among the countries with which Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations following its independence. The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for over thirty years.

According to Uzbek government sources, the relationship is based on “principles of mutual respect, sovereign equality, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.”

The sources add that these principles “have laid the foundation for political dialogue, economic exchanges, and collaboration within international and regional organizations, including the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement.”

The volume of bilateral trade remains modest, but both countries see strong potential for future growth.
