Toronto – Ethiopia urged BRICS to “intensify collective action” in the direction of addressing global challenges of peace and development.
Ethiopia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera, made the call during 3rd BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting India organized in New York on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
India will be assuming the BRICS Chair position in 2026, taking over from Brazil.
At the 3rd BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting Ambassador Hadera Abera highlighted “armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, and disruptions to development,’ as key challenges impacting developing countries. He is quoted as saying ““Maintaining peace and security enables all people to enjoy equal opportunity to lead a decent life.”
Ethiopia itself has been experiencing bloody conflict one after another after Abiy Ahmed became president in 2018. Two years of conflict in the Tigray region is said to have claimed over one million lives. Another bloody conflict has been raging in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. There was a point in 2024 when the government arrested opposition leaders for organizing an anti-war rally in the capital.
Another issue that Ambassador Hadera discussed was about the need to extend BRICS membership and outlines three priority areas, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
He stated ” Transforming declarations into tangible results, pushing for fair reform of global financial institutions to better serve the Global South, and to lead by example through fostering peaceful and friendly relations among countries,” as priority areas.
