Toronto – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia on Friday disclosed that the fourth Ethiopia-Uganda Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) meeting was held in Addis Ababa. This round of meeting came after six years.
It took place at the Skylight Hotel. Gedion Timothewos, Minister for Foreign Affairs and his Ugandan counterpart, Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakha, attended it.
The commission is said to be “vital” for “assessing and enhancing” the bilateral relations between the two countries.
“…his Joint Ministerial Commission would provide an opportunity to further enhance bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries, which rely on a shared vision and mutual respect…” Gedion Timothewos is cited as saying.
Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister on his part remarked that “The 4th Session of the JMC is another building block to propel our bilateral relations to greater heights,” as quoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.
Diplomatic consultations, transboundary water management, regional peace and security, cooperation in trade, energy, immigration, tourism, agriculture, and transport were among key topics discussed at the meeting, as reported by the MFAE. Ethiopia and Uganda are signatories of the Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement.
The third Joint Ministerial Commission between the two countries took place in 2019 in Kampala.
It is also indicated that Ethiopia and Uganda have signed “a bilateral Air Services Agreement, along with seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering diverse areas of cooperation.”
Ethiopia and Uganda started diplomatic relations in 1962 following Uganda’s independence from Britain.
