Toronto – The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa on Friday issued a brief alert regarding crime and security in Ethiopia. It sees a possible spontaneous and ubiquitous demonstration in the country, and advises U.S. citizens in the country to stay away from it.
Incidentally, the executive committee of the ruling Prosperity party announced that it is holding a two days of meeting to discuss what the Prime Minister called, a message he shared on social media page, “to deliberate on key national priorities and party-centred thematic issues.”
There have been recurring incidents of mass passenger kidnappings and killings – particularly in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Incidents of ransom kidnapping have also been reported in the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia. However, the prediction the U.S. embassy is making – and it is presumed that the U.S. embassy might have intelligence information – appears to be different from one that the country has been experiencing.
The brief statement it published on its website reads as follows :
“The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to always pay attention to personal safety and security for yourself and your family.
Crime can occur anywhere and at any time; vigilance is key to reducing vulnerability. Avoid demonstrations, rallies, and other large gatherings. These types of gatherings may result in increased traffic congestion, police presence and police checkpoints throughout the city, and violence.
In many cases, these events, demonstrations, and/or traffic issues may occur spontaneously, and we encourage everyone to remain alert.”
Active and large scale military conflict has been underway in the Amhara region of Ethiopia for nearly two years now. Also, there is an ongoing conflict in the Oromia region of Ethiopia where there has been a notable security crisis.
The security alert from the U.S. embassy lacks spatial specification. The ruling party has been making arrests in the capital Addis Ababa over an alleged plan to pose danger to the “constitutional order.” Recent reports from multiple local media outlets indicated that over 60 youth disappeared in the capital Addis Ababa.
This week, a 24 year old young man told a Federal court in Addis Ababa that he has been in solitary confinement in the office of security officials and that he was beaten severely to the point that he can not stand, and asked the court to be allowed to arrested with other suspects in Kaliti. He was arrested on alleged grounds of “terrorism.”

Those of you who plan to travel to the old country and those who are already there should heed to this alert and advisories by the US Embassy and avoid demonstrations and spontaneous protests. Also, kidnappings for ransom are in the news these days more often than before especially in Amhara and Oromia regions. You could be the enchilada for a big payday for those vagabonds wreaking havoc in those two regions.
