Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Two people were killed and more than 20 head of cattle stolen during an armed attack in the Anuak Zone of Ethiopia’s Gambella region on Sunday, according to Tikvah Ethiopia.
The incident occurred around 3:00 PM in Chebo village, Nine Kebele of Abobo district. Eyewitnesses told Tikvah Ethiopia that the victims—identified as Melese Larago and Zeleke Gabore, both aged between 45 and 50—were herding cattle when they were shot and killed by a group of eight armed assailants wearing militia-style uniforms. The attackers also seized 20 cattle before fleeing.
Local militia forces reportedly secured the area shortly after the attack.
Sunday’s violence follows a similar incident on May 6, where residents reported the theft of over 100 cattle. Though no casualties were recorded in that case, attempts to retrieve the livestock were met with gunfire.
Residents of Abobo district have voiced ongoing concern over rising insecurity, citing a previous deadly assault in Kebele 17 that left four people dead. Some locals blame the violence on armed groups from South Sudan, a claim disputed by residents who say the perpetrators are homegrown militants.
“We have been reporting these attacks to every level of government, but no action has been taken,” one resident told Tikvah Ethiopia. “We’ve been here since 1985, but now we’re being pushed to the brink. How do we survive when everything we’ve built is taken in a day?”
With rising fears and no apparent intervention, community members are urging both regional authorities and the federal government to deploy security forces to prevent further bloodshed and loss.
