Toronto – Another significant signs of tensions between the Federal government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is unfolding in the access points to the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

BBC Amharic on Friday reported that trucks carrying goods and other items to the Tigray region of Ethiopia are not allowed to proceed from two entry points, one in the Woldia area of Amhara region and Serdo area of  the Afar region of Ethiopia.

Truck drivers reported about it to BBC Tigrigna service. Several days ago the Tigray regional officer for Trade and export reported the matter, according to the source.

BBC Amharic cited Kassahun Kendeya, the region’s consumer protection directorate in the office of trade and export, as saying that the trucks were carrying basic commodity items needed in the region.

He stated that the restriction started on Monday this week.   However, the truck drivers,  who were driving from different parts of Ethiopia and from Djibouti, reportedly said it has been seven days now since they were made to stop in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

A truck driver who was heading to the Tigray from the direction of the Afar region of Ethiopia told the source that he was stopped in the locality of Serdo Medo and Adaytu  last Saturday.

The decision appears to be from the Federal government. Federal police forces posted in the checkpoints in the locations above are reportedly implementing the new regulations.

Truck drivers  were told that it is a directive  “from a higher authority.”  They are told to stay until another directive is given to the federal police force posted at the checkpoint.

At the time of this writing, there appears to be no official confirmation or explanation from the Federal government. However, there have been allegations in recent weeks that the TPLF under the Debrestion Gebremichael have been sending consumer goods including fuel which were allegedly sent to Tigray with Federal government subsidy. Earlier this week, it was reported that the border in Zalambessa and Shiraro was opened as an alliance between the TPLF and Eritrean government is deepening.

The TPLF released a statement in reaction to the restriction of trucks to the region. It said the measure violates the Pretoria Agreement which ended the bloody two years war in November 2022.  The organization itself is removed from the list of legally registered political organizations with the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on grounds of violating rules.

There are also reports from the Tigray Interim Administration under Let. General Tadesse Worede has requested clarification from the Federal government why restriction is imposed.
