Toronto – As the deadline the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) gave the TPLF to comply with rules is around the corner, senior and mid level officials of the later concluded and released a statement this week rejecting the decision and accusing the Federal government of “lack of determination to implement the Pretoria agreement.”
For the NEBE, the TPLF has to comply with rules to be registered again including undertaking a party congress inline with the guidelines of the board. The TPLF, to be specific the faction under Debretsion Gebremichal, undertook a “congress” in August 2024 which the Board rejected. And TPLF was instructed to comply with the rule which did not happen.
In February this year, the NEBE issued a last warning with suspension from any political activity until NEBE requirements are fulfilled and threatened that the party could be dismissed as a legally registered party if it fails to meet the Board’s regulations. The TPLF was designated as a terrorist Organization in May 2021 in view of the reported attack it undertook against the Northern Command of the Ethiopian Defense Force – and the massacres in the Afar and Amhara regions of Ethiopia.
The Organization was reregistered as a regional political party under “special condition” in August 2024. A legislative amendment was made to accommodate the TPLF. However, the TPLF failed to comply with conditions that the Board gave including a Board recognized party congress.
The offer is not attractive enough to the TPLF. It is arguing that it should regain its legal status in accordance with the Pretoria Agreement which ended the bloody two years war. It sees the requirement to re-register the party as something that violates the agreement.
“We oppose the Board attempting to make our party look like a rebel due to the popular struggle that TPLF made,” the TPLF said in the statement it released. It threatens that the Board decision not to “restore” TPLF legal status could have a bad consequence. It did not spell it out.
There is no sign that the Electoral Board will allow the TPLF to dictate the rules of political party operation in the country. On the other hand there have been rumors recently that the TPLF faction under Debretsion Gebremichael has been clandestinely working with Eritrea to stir conflict in the Northern parts of the country. This evening, Eritrean Press, a prominent Eritrean news source, reported that TPLF leaders are considering getting an Eritrean Passport. Some politicians in Tigray, like Gebru Asrat and Tsadkan Gebretensae, have been warning war could break out in the region.
