Senior interim official announces imminent disarmament as civil services and local government structures expand across the Tigray region

By Staff Writer
(Nairobi, Kenya) — Senior leadership of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) will participate in the formal Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) process within days, as the newly established interim administration expands civil services and local government structures across the region.
Speaking to state-affiliated broadcaster Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Asefa Abrha, Chief Executive of Administration and Public Service for the Tigray Region Interim Government, stated that senior TPLF figures have no viable alternative to peace and will soon surrender their arms to return to civilian life. Asefa declared that previous military ambitions by the TPLF were met with total defeat, resulting in the complete scattering of its forces and the restoration of stability along Ethiopia’s borders.
Highlighting the rapid execution of the demobilization campaign, Asefa noted that high registration volumes at the initial DDR center in Mekelle prompted authorities to open secondary registration facilities in Shire, Adigrat, Abi Adi, and Maychew. He emphasized that the majority of combatants entering the program—many of whom were former civil servants, educators, merchants, and private workers—will receive full assistance from the interim administration to facilitate their rapid reintegration into normal community life and economic activity.
Addressing public service restoration, Asefa announced that education, healthcare, agricultural support, and civil service operations have officially resumed following four to five days of institutional preparations. He noted that public elections and appointments for municipal and local officials across Mekelle, the Southern zone, and the Southeastern zone are scheduled for completion within two to three days. These administrative structures will subsequently establish local security committees, militias, and police units to maintain public order and support commercial activities.
Concurrently, the interim administration is coordinating with federal authorities, local stakeholders, and international aid organizations to implement a reliable humanitarian distribution framework aimed at assisting displaced populations and mitigating regional food shortages caused by recent drought. Reflecting on his field observations across the region, Asefa affirmed that the people of Tigray, exhausted by prolonged conflict, are eager to move past wartime hardship and focus on socio-economic recovery.
