Toronto –  As Egypt continues to make threats and diplomatic campaigns on alleged grounds of “unilateral decision on the use of the Nile water,”  the dam is finally set to be officially inaugurated on September 9 this year.

The Ethiopian Government has reportedly sent out invitation to dignitaries and heads of states in Africa and beyond for the inauguration event. However, no further detail is made available to the public at the time of this writing.

It took well over 14 years and over U.S. $5 billion in spending. According to public statements and records, the project was entirely financed from local sources. However, U.S. President Donald Trump made claims in recent months that the United States funded the dam, which Ethiopian Authorities in charge of the dam dispute as “incorrect.”

Ethiopia’s Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, Demeke Atenahu,   on Thursday spoke to BBC Amharic regarding the GERD Inauguration.

“Several challenges that were in place [in the course of completing the project] were passed,” Ambassador Demeke is quoted as saying. The Ethiopian government had been linking what appeared, back then, a persistent security crisis in the region where the Dam project is located to a sabotage by “foreign powers.”  The speculation was that Egypt was spending in destabilizing Ethiopia.

Apart from internal security challenges, Ethiopia experienced a tense diplomatic battle against Egypt and Sudan. The series of negotiations held in Cairo, Khartoum and Addis Ababa were not a success.  Continental multilateral institutions like the Organization of African Unity initiated talks with the aim to resolve the dispute diplomatically to no avail. The European Union and the United States were also involved in the process at some point but there was no breakthrough.

Egypt has been advancing a claim of “historical right” over the Nile making a reference to the 1859 agreement to which Ethiopia was not a party. That agreement granted Egypt with over 55 percent of the Nile water. Sudan was getting about 18 percent of it. Ethiopia, a country which generates over 85 percent of the water, was allocated with zero water share – something Ethiopia has been rejecting as unacceptable. Ethiopia argued that colonial era agreement, as it relates to the shared resource, does not reflect the realities of the 21st century.

During his interview, he highlighted that over half of the Ethiopian population does not have access to electricity and the project was launched with the aim to make electric power accessible to them.

Ethiopia has also started selling electric power to neighboring countries  like Djibouti, Sudan, Tanzania and Kenya, according to the Ambassador.

GERD is said to generate over 5000 MW of Electric power.  It is currently reported to be completed  with 145 meters height and over 1780 kilometers of length. The reservoir is said to have a holding capacity of over 74 billion cubic meters of water.

  1. The inauguration should also be observed and celebrated in every community of our Diaspora. The dam should be a feat all of us should be very proud of. It is also my wishes that the late Emperor should be credited with originating the idea of building a dam going back in the 1960’s ordering the first survey of the landscape where the dam is standing now. The late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi should also be credited for reviving the idea and starting the construction of the dam. His successor former Prime Minister Haile Mariam should not be shunned and be given the due credit. But that is my wishes and credits must be accorded where it is due. It should never be politicized.

Meanwhile, I would like to take a moment to congratulate the people of Ethiopia who pitched in the last penny in their pockets to finance the construction and including those of us who did the best we can to support this historic and monumental endeavor. Congratulations!!!!

  2. Hey all of you Abids(niggers) and khadamis(house niggers) from DR of Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi. Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti better listen to me el-Sisi your Sayeedi-al-Walaaabeede! I am ordering you not to touch and don’t even think about scooping a single teaspoon of water from The Nile and all tributaries. My beasts of burdens(Heehaw! Heehaw!) in Piccola Roma and Villa Mogadishu are not included in this dire and final warning. I will have Ethiopia for breakfast and that will be a cake walk for my indomitable army since OLA, Fano and TPLF are eagerly waiting for my arrival. I will use the rest of you as makhshees(snacks). As you can see, I did not need to send a single soldier into The Sudan and she is done with just a push of a button from my office here in Al-Qahirah. That is called remote control.

I heard that that the thing I hate with a passion, Ethiopia, is planning to celebrate the inauguration of this dam and has invited all of you to the party. If I were you I will decline the invitation. You can go there at your own risk because my number one air force in the world will rain fire on you abd(niggers’) asses while gulping down khamr. Don’t even think about going there!!!
