Toronto – Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the Tigray region of Ethiopia protest for a third day demanding to be restored to their homes. It took place in Mekelle, Romant Square.
Many residents from Mekelle joined the protestors as the protest came to a close on Friday, according to DW Amharic report.
The protestors say they should not spend the rainy season in IDPs camp for the fifth time. Ethiopia’s rainy season is starting soon and lasts until September.
The Interim Administration in the region has announced that it supports the demands of the IDPs. Government offices remained closed for the event. The demand is for the Federal government to address the situation.
Amanuel Assefa, Deputy President of the Tigray Interim Administration and Deputy Chairman of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who made a speech during the protest said “the Ethiopian government should give an immediate response to this demand.”
In a speech he made to the protestors, he reportedly said that “the suffering the people of Tigray endured is overflowing. Because of that we all are running out of patience…”
The IDPs were displaced from Wolkait and Tegede area – areas which the TPLF incorporated into the Tigray region after it took power in 1991.
Some leaders of opposition parties who operate in the Tigray region of Ethiopia raised the topic during a meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The Prime Minister claimed that his government attempted to return IDPs more than ten times. He also said that his government is ready to return the IDPs as soon as possible.
From what he said, what appears to have complicated that matter is that the TPLF demands to return armed groups along with IDPs under the guise of security concern. Also, the TPLF is claiming that the area has to be under the Tigray region again – a condition that is not accepted by people in Wolkait and Tegede. There had been an identity question for decades as the residents in these areas were demanding their ethnic Amhara identity to be respected.
Abiy Ahmed did not reveal details of why the effort to return IDPs failed. However, he made a reference to an interest, apparently on the part of the TPLF, to exploit IDPs return agenda to achieve a political goal. He also mentioned that his government is being patient to avoid war despite “unconstitutional” practices of the TPLF.
Human Rights First, an advocacy organization, is urging for the demands of the IDPs to be addressed immediately, and that it not be used for a political purpose.
