Toronto – Let. General Tadesse Worede, President of Tigray Interim Administration, is reportedly facing opposition in connection with what is described as TPLF’s forceful control of the Raya area. His administration introduced unpopular leadership changes in the area.
On Friday, there was a popular protest in Maichew, South of the regional capital Mekelle.
Protestors have requested Tadese Worede for the withdrawal of TPLF forces deployed in the city in a move to control the city by force. Most administrations in what is called the “southern Tigray” were under the control of officials loyal to Getachew Reda’s faction – which later formed the Semret Party.
Protesters in Maichew chanted “the interest of Raya people is peace,” as reported by Borkena staff from Ethiopia.
It was reported that head of South Tigray zone administration, Haftu Kiros, took up arms against the decision to deploy military forces to make the leadership change in the zone. On Saturday, there were reports that Haftu returned to the town. However, arrangements under which he returned to the zone are unclear. Local sources on Saturday reported that his sibling was killed by the TPLF forces.
Similarly, there was a protest in Mehoni, another town south of Mekelle. Massive protest against the TPLF forces was something unthinkable even immediately after the TPLF lost the war.
However, since then there has been growing disenchantment against the TPLF. Yet, the TPLF still controls a considerable military power and is said to have the capacity to take over administration in the region by force.
It was in April this year that the Federal government appointed Let. General Tadesse Worede as Interim president of the region. Politicians like Gebru Asrat opposed it at the time. Tadesse is said to have a political loyalty to the TPLF faction under Debretsion Gebremichael.
In response to the recent opposition in towns like Maichew and Mehoni, Tadesse Worede has reportedly held discussion, in Mekelle, with elders from these towns. What is known so far is that the elders have expressed the interest of the people of Raya : Peace. It is reported that people tend to see forceful take over of TPLF as a sort of “invasion.”
