Toronto – Tigray Interim Administration on Tuesday claimed that it is facing cash shortages to pay salaries for public servants.
A letter from the office of General Tadesse Worede, the interim president, was reportedly distributed to all public service offices.
It is said to have stated that there is not enough cash in the treasury to payout salaries including for the Ethiopian Month of Yekatit (February). However, it was unspecified as to how long the regional government will be unable to pay salaries.
The region is saying that there is delay from the Federal government budget transfer. Weakening in circulation cash transactions is another reason cited for the cash shortages.
The situation has brought about economic and social troubles to public servants in the region. As is the case elsewhere in Ethiopia, there have been reports of unbearable cost of living in the Tigray region.
The Federal government has not yet remarked on the claim.
In December 2025, the Tigray region made claims that the Federal government did not make a budget transfer for about two months – back then. For the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year (2025/26), a total of 18.8 billion birr budget was allocated for the region, according to the region’s plan commission. And the monthly transfer was about 844 million birr for the capital budget.
At the time it was reported that the interim administration was communicating with the Federal government seeking explanation as to why the budget transfer was delayed. But no explanations were offered.
The Federal government has been making accusations that the administration in the region is channeling government budget to pay for over 200,000 forces armed under the leadership of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
On Tuesday this week, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s 40 minutes long interview in Tigrigna language with state-owned media was released. He alleged that the TPLF is making extensive military preparations to open another round of war. He insinuated that the response from the Federal government will be harsh. As well, the Federal government alleges that the Eritrean government is collaborating with the TPLF in an effort to open war against Ethiopia.
