Toronto – Tadesse Worede, one of the commanders of what was organized as Tigray force and current Deputy President of Tigray Interim Administration, on Sunday revealed mediation efforts to reconcile the two factions of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was not a success.
It appears that Tigray region security forces were among those who were making the effort to mediate the two factions to resolve their differences through political dialogue.
What is cited as a major factor for it is that the rival groups are obsessed and preoccupied with the idea of “eliminating one another” rather than resolving their differences through dialogue.
It is cited that one of the major problems was that the political difference between the two groups was not created recently. It was building up for many years which made it difficult to reconcile the two groups.
There was a view , which was widely reported by many Ethiopian news outlets, that the major cause for the division within the TPLF that led to the emergence of the two factions was the Pretoria Agreement that was signed on November 22, 2024. It ended the war between the TPLF led Tigray regional administration and Abiy Ahmed led Federal government.
Tadesse Worede, who was a senior military commander in the Ethiopian Defense Force, appeared on Tigray Television to update the public.
“The main cause of the political difference is the senior leadership and the effort that was made was at the level of the senior leadership, ” he is cited as saying.
He underscored that the problem still needs a political solution and the claims that “the security force [of the region] is our supporter which is reflected directly and indirectly” is unacceptable. There was an allegation that Debretsion’s faction of the TPLF has been making claims his group has support from “the Tigray Defense Force.”
Tadesse Worede said the region’s security force role is to ensure the peace and security of the region , and can not stand in support of one of the factions.
From what he said, there is anticipation for people in the region to put pressure on both factions to resolve their problem through a round table dialogue.
Debretesion’s faction organized what was described as the 14th party congress in August this year and he was re-elected as party chairman. Subsequently, his group announced that it had purged members of the other factions. His group also contended Getachew Reda, who is currently president of the Interim Administration, should be removed as he was representing the TPLF.
Both factions were appointing officials at zone and district levels. The problem with Debrestion’s move is that his claim as representative of the TPLF does not have recognition from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia. In fact, TPLF is given three months to undertake party congress.
Meanwhile, Debretsion’s group has been blocking officials appointed by the Tigray region Interim Administration. And it is generating some resistance. Earlier this week, there were protests in Mekelle. Protestors demanded that the appointed mayor, Berhan Gebreeyesus, should start office.
